Blackwater Park is considered by many as the absolute masterpiece of Opeth. Considering the quality of his other works, we can easily qualify it as a huge success.
The duality of Opeth has never been as magnificent and essential as on this Blackwater Park, the calmest and most atmospheric passages are beautiful to cry and the Death metal passages are swirling and very Heavy, two extremes that cohabit very naturally.
The production of Steven Wilson is also very important on this opus, the sound is clear and precise, each instrument has all the space necessary to its expression without encroaching on the others. The atmospheric side is also put forward, the acoustic passages are magnificent and bring some light to a very dark music in general.
The first track, 'The Lepper Affinity', comes in at full speed and sums up the ambition of the band. The listener has no chance: once in the world of Opeth, you don't get out, or at least you get out deeply upset. All the facets of the band are explored on this track, alternately heavy then calm and a hypnotizing piano ending. Then, it's another matter, 'Bleak' takes you by the throat, with its very progressive structure and its monumental riff.
We could describe each track for hours, from the beautiful and very melodic 'Harvest' and 'Drapery Falls', to the apocalyptic 'Dirge For November' and 'Patterns In The Ivy', or the very dark 'Blackwater Park', so much they are full of qualities.
It's beautiful, haunting, heavy and incredibly inspired, with outstanding musicians whose talent shines throughout this masterpiece. This album is really a huge slap in the face that establishes Opeth on its throne and gives it a definitive status of cult band, one of the best of all time. Nothing less. - Official website
