One would have thought that Pineapple Thief, who had already released their second album with some hesitation, wouldn't come back with a third opus anytime soon. However, it's done with "Variation On A Dream", a title that reveals a lot about the content.

Indeed, we're quite far from the previous album which was a mix of different inspirations from the indie world for more acoustic tracks in a simple style, essentially based on sound harmonies.

The vocals are similar to Muse's without the nervous side. On the instrumental side, keyboards chords and piano phrasing are complemented by electric guitars delivering held notes in accompaniment, a very good bass and electric or acoustic guitar. The technique is totally left aside to let the listener soak up the haunting, heady and sometimes even raging ambiences.

Even if we are far from the plenitude of Sigur Ros or the sensitivity of Anathema, the concept of this "Variation On A Dream" rubs shoulders with these two references with a certain success. Calm tracks with jubilant power rises and more animated compositions with strong percussions follow one another, based on the same theme: the dream.

Let's add that the few electric sounds add an additional depth to an already varied content and palpable atmospheres. The result is a very interesting album by a band that was not yet known at the time and that deserves to be listened to, even nowadays.

If Bruce Soord got us used to the interview game, it is today the great Gavin Harrison who took over for our greatest pleasure!

PROGRESSIVE METAL - "Below" The Lights is a record that fascinates, amazes and makes Enslaved a cult band.
SPOCK'S BEARD: Feel Euphoria (2003)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - If "Feel Euphoria" is a new start for Spock's Beard after the departure of Neal Morse, it remains an excellent album of progressive rock.
