After a very successful second album, Metallica arrived in 1986 at a climax of its career. In spite of a certain mistrust towards the producers which dates from "Kill 'Em All", they work again with the Dane Flemming Rasmussen, and after four long months in studio, Metallica delivers us here one of its most achieved works.
The recipes used on the previous opus, "Ride The Lightning", are taken back with as much brilliantly. The wild Thrash is always present in tracks like "Battery", or the grandiloquent "Disposable Heroe". The recent softer tendency is also present in tracks like "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", which alternates verses in a style close to the ballad to toughen the tone on the chorus. The splendid instrumental "Orion" shows the talent of bassist Cliff Burton in an almost symphonic atmosphere, inspired by a deep attachment of the latter to classical music.
The riffs are always as sharp, like the one of "Lepper Messiah" (which Dave Mustaine will claim without success) or the incredible "Master Of Puppets". The latter remains, twenty three years later, an ultimate reference in metal. An illustrious unknown fan will declare: "Master, it's all Metallica in one song". Indeed, with its murderous riffs, its intro that leads to raging verses, its fabulous melodic central break and its fast and snarling solo, this track is a masterpiece. In general, James Hetfield's vocals on the album is more and more mastered, his voice gaining in tessitura. The musicians continue their progression while the production gives a sound more and more clean to the band, marking the album of the seal of the control.
Indeed, we can feel the band even more mature than on "Ride The Lightning", and thus light years away from the young rebels of "Kill 'Em All". The study of the lyrics even reveals an almost conceptual logic. Thus, most of the titles deal with the enslavement of the human race by the various plagues that are drugs, politics, violence and religion (with which James settles a little his accounts, considering it responsible for the death of his mother when he was sixteen). These various impediments are recounted throughout the album, ending with "Damage, Inc." which urges the listener to break free of his chains.
All these elements lead to the following conclusion: "Master Of Puppets" is a masterpiece. This quality is not the result of chance but of the constant progression of one of the major bands of these last years. Unfortunately it is also the last album with this line up, Cliff Burton dying a few months after the release of the album, in a tragic accident. He leaves with this album a splendid legacy to the metal planet. - Official website

Et bien oui, je ne met que 4/5 à cet album. Les morceaux sont incroyables, Master of puppets bien sur, le bohemian rapsody du métal. Je me souviens du choc lorsque je l'ai entendu pour la première fois, j'explorais un peu au hasard le métal, sortant de ma période led zep et acdc. C'était terrible, j'ai détesté ce morceaux, mais en même temps j'avais besoin de le réécouter, sans savoir pourquoi. Il est fascinant! Et maintenant je l'écoute plusieurs fois par semaines.
Ensuite Orion, leur meilleure balade, Battery et sa vitesse. Les morceaux sont bons, mais il manque un équilibre dans cet album. Il faut s'accrocher pour l'écouter du début à la fin, c'est long. C'est pour cette raison que Ride the lightning est pour moi meilleur, il est parfaitement équilibré. Master est étouffant mais reste néanmoins un classique à écouter.
