"Moving away from its original style, Pure Reason Revolution still manages to offer us an excellent album."

Pure Reason Revolution... you remember, don't you? This English progressive rock band that sort of 'revolutionised' the genre a few years ago with their debut album released in 2006. Hovering, bewitching, with a floydian sound and a particular spirit giving the band its own personality, "The Dark Third" was a masterstroke.
Listening to the first bars of "Amor Vincit Omnique" is a shock! Electronic sounds, accompanied by a rhythmic like a drum machine, the whole doubled with some electro sounds here and there... Let's say it right away, the first reflex is to check carefully that we didn't make the wrong album! After confirmation, the second track drives the nail in. If 'Victorious Cupid' contains more rock riffs, including a real electric guitar and real drums, the whole is based on sounds rather electro and without any real progression.
From track to track, the conclusion is obvious: Pure Reason Revolution has radically changed its style. Goodbye to the soft floydian flights or the long rises in power like on 'The Bright Ambassadors of Morning', the band has adopted a much more direct, powerful, less progressive style, and with omnipresent electronic sounds. However, even if at first glance one could shout scandal by cursing the band for the musical turn it has taken, several listenings may perhaps change the most refractory ones' minds...
Because Pure Reason Revolution manages to marry a soaring and evolutionary rock with modern sounds to deliver a simply catchy and seductive mix... To name a few tracks that make the greatness of this album, we must mention 'Apogee / Requiem For The Lovers', evolving from a calm verse elegantly blending classical and electro sounds to a saturated guitar chorus, leading to an interlude with a powerful and tortured riff, before ending in a soothingly soft chorus. 'Deus Ex Machina' and its ultra-electro riff could easily be played in a nightclub, as it's powerful and catchy, while containing some pretty progressive and interesting riffs. 'The Gloaming' and its slow progression leaves you dreaming, mixing a soft piano and always electronic sounds to finish in an electronic explosion with a huge riff ! Finally, 'AVO' (for 'Amor Vincit Omnia'), concludes the album in the most beautiful way, with its piano supported by an ultra efficient rhythm and rich sounds, before ending in a powerful rise on striking chorus...
All in all, far from being a disappointment, "Amor Vincit Omnia" is an excellent album, demonstrating once again the talent and ingenuity of PRR! Surprising, powerful, tasty and emotional, the album that Pure Reason Revolution has just released is simply a must-have! - Official website
