Two years after the very appreciate ''Escape'', Journey released in 1983 ''Frontiers'', a monument of Melodic Hard Rock. An album to possess ? Better than that, a possessed album ! Indeed, as "Escape" had marked the spirits by its beautiful melodies as much as "Frontiers", while renewing the performance, has increased it tenfold by adding a much more Hard Rock sound.

In that respect, the introduction is as thunderous as the beginning of the B side of the vinyl. The opening of "Seperate Waves" is monstrous, the synth/drums/guitar triptych gives us one of the best Hard FM album openings known and the rest is in the same vein; a beautiful verse and a breathtaking chorus, the quintessence of harmony. The start of "The Edge of the Blade" is just as breathtaking, the track is of an equally exceptional melodic level but the sound is much harder. You are dealing here with one of the most resounding hard FM songs of all time, no more and no less.

And the rest is just as good with killing melodies, unforgettable solos, transporting synths and an incomparable voice. "Back Talk" is in the same vein as Van Halen's "Everybody Wants Some", "Frontiers", "Rubicon" and "Troubled Child" present Steve Smith at the top of his game and what about the magnificent ballads, "Send her my Love" and "Faithfully"?

No need to add more. "Frontiers" is a cult album that every Hard FM fan must know. Let's mention that if you listen to the remastered album of 2006 or if you search on the compilation "The Essential" or "Greatest Hits", you will find four tracks dating from this album. Two rather anecdotal: "Liberty" and "Only Solutions", but especially two others that were used as soundtrack, one - "Only the Young" - for the movie "Vision Quest" by Harold Becker with Matthew Modine, the other - "Ask the Lonely" - for a movie with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John: "Two of a Kind".

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN: Marching Out (1985)
HEAVY METAL - If "Trilogy" is probably the flagship album of Yngwie Malmsteen's FM period, "Marching Out" is certainly his best Metal record.
VAN HALEN: For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991)
HARD ROCK - "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" joins the closed circle of the essential US Hard albums and finally legitimizes Sammy Hagar in the eyes of Van Halen fans.
