There are artists for whom any attempt at objectivity is in vain... Devin Townsend is one of them! And as you can imagine, I'm one of those who idolize the musical genius of the schizophrenic Canadian... So, for those who don't share this craze, we can summarize "Ki" as a new album that highlights the atmospheric/minimalist side of Devin Townsend like a "Terria" or even an "Ocean Machine".

The first acoustic notes of the minimalist "A Monday" straight from the master's guitar set the stage for a new wonderful journey as only the Canadian minstrel can tell. Indeed, the "Ki" experience can be seen as the inner introspection of an artist who has cast out all his demons. Finally in good shape, Devin Townsend lulls us with enchanting melodies as in the sublime "Winter" or the small jewel "Terminal".

Precisely, the intimate atmosphere of "Ki" could cool down Devin Townsend fans furiously enraged by the Strapping Young Lad era. "Ki" is more like the flow of a calm sea during a summer sunset. Unlike his previous personal projects, the Canadian allows himself only a few rare moments of the dark side of his personality. And although latent in the majority of titles, his raging outbursts only appear on "Disruptr", "Gato" and especially "Heaven Send". But this display of hatred is now in the image of its creator and above all framed by the voluptuous voice of the guest Che, generating a magical contrast. Moreover, the last two tracks quoted will be respectively illustrated by Zappaian shots reminding us of his master Steve Vai's "Flex-able" period on "Gato", but also a technical and dissonant solo on "Heaven Send".

"Ki" is full of melodies that come to haunt you like those of the eponymous title and its heady crescendo vocal harmonies. Often minimalist melodies supported by an organic and uncluttered production as if to better exploit the experience and emotion conveyed by Jean Savoie's omnipresent bass and the jazzy drums of veteran Duris Maxwell, known notably for having played with the greatest like Jimi Hendrix. In this respect, the most sceptical will only have to throw an ear to the jazzy lounge track "Ain't Never Gonna Win...". " as well as the devilish rock'n'roll of " Trainfire ", the unlikely meeting of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis's piano.

Whatever the strings used, the magic of the Canadian always works wonders and after listening to this first part, I can't wait to hear the rest of the tetralogy that will confirm the announced rebirth of an artist at the peak of his career.

DREAM THEATER: Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - At the risk of disappointing fans waiting for a masterpiece, this album is simply good. Of a depressing quality and consistency, infallible product of a carefully oiled mechanism.
MEGADETH: Rust In Peace (1990)
THRASH - Metallica had its "Master Of Puppets", Megadeth will have its "Rust In Peace", a masterpiece that elevated the band to the pantheon of Thrash legends.
