In 1990, the major bands of what history will remember as the 80's Heavy Metal released their outstanding albums. The genre was already running out of steam. The FM or glam' incursions begin to alter the will of a lot of bands. In the distance, grunge and other mixes that will get the better of the uncompromising aspect of heavy metal are looming with well-known names: Nirvana, Faith No More or even Rage Against The Machine.

While Iron Maiden will slow down the rhythm to enter into a dark period, Judas Priest, unshakeable, decides that if heavy metal must die, it will be in beauty and power. "Painkiller" will be a condensed version of what makes the strength of this genre so fascinating.

From the now famous introduction of 'Painkiller', the listener is plunged into a sonic whirlwind. The riffs are so sharp, cold and powerful that they send any current band back to the closet, almost twenty years later. The work of the two guitarists is at its peak, as "Ram It Down" suggested. Sharp cut, lightning metallic shocks, supersonic and sometimes neo-classical soli... It is a festival that the Tipton/Downing pair offers us here. Almost every riff will become cult afterwards: 'Painkiller', 'Metal Meltdown', 'Leather Rebel', 'All Guns Blazing', 'Touch Of Evil'...

Rob Halford is also amazing. If these past performances already showed a great singer, he reaches here the status of a legend. Who can boast of being able to sing titles like 'Painkiller' or 'All Guns Blazing'? His supersonic organ seems stainless. No challenge makes him waver and he reaches new heights with superhuman power and precision. The traditional effects on his voice are more focused: without diminishing the power, they take away from Metal God's vocals all warmth, all humanity.

In fact, the only weak point of "Painkiller" is to be itself. The tracks, all composed in the same way, may seem repetitive, or at least very aggressive. Anyway, at the dawn of a new decade, Judas Priest did not tremble and composed a heavy metal album as if this one was to be the last of all.
