As the sirens of the eponymous title suggest, the warning is not hypothetical, we are faced with the explosion of Soilwork. Somehow, the surprise isn't that big. Even if "Steelbath Suicide" was far from perfect, it was a forerunner of a band with great potential. Potential confirmed in "The Chainheart Machine" from the very first notes. The new members, Ola Frenning (guitarist, Peter Wichers' uncle) and Henry Ranta (drums), are the main elements of the musical evolution that Soilwork records.
Raging syncopated riffs, blast-beats galore, crazy breaks, wild solos on which neither of the two Swedes leaves his part to the other, and hardcore screamed vocals, have the best part in this opus coming from elsewhere. Without forgetting the production signed by Fredrik Nordström (from the famous Fredman studios), producer of the melodeath bands At The Gates, Arch Enemy, and Opeth. If he was also in charge of the production on "Steelbath Suicide", the progression is like the rest: monumental. From the hallucinating eponymous overture with its devastating riff, to the slaughtering "Million Flame" and its monumental break announced by Ola Fink's groovy bass lines (a little behind for the rest).
Lack of breathing space, breathlessness, redundancy of the tracks that follow one another, are the three reasons combined? In any case, the second half of this opus leaves the listener, who was so excited by the flamboyant beginning, wanting more. It's probably an effect specific to the style, because from this opus onwards, all Soilwork's albums (and those of other bands in the genre) will, to a varying degree, leave you with this feeling of déjà vu.
The fiery opus of "The Chainheart Machine" proves to be a real revelation in the eyes of the general public, making the combo the equal of Dark Tranquillity or In Flames. Soilwork have indeed created their own style, a melodeath tinged with thrash and hardcore screamed vocals. A recipe that the band will later try to make more accessible to the general public by making its recipe even more melodic by including clear vocals. - Official website
