Following his recent signing to extreme metal giants Nuclear Blast, Soilwork's third album marks the band's evolution towards the melodeath he is known for, and which so many bands strive to copy without any originality.

If the introductory 'Bastard Chain' takes Soilwork into his usual heavy/modern thrash territory, it's not until 'Like An Average Stalker' that the band's musical evolution becomes apparent, with Björn Strid singing clear refrains. At the time, this approach may have sounded like heresy, but the result is clearly effective, as evidenced by the monumental 'Needlefeast', enriched by the futuristic aspect of Carlos Holmberg's modern keyboard sounds.

The main effect of these changes is to make Soilwork's music more melodic and therefore more accessible than ever to the general public. The result is a soft, melodic thrash/death, in which clear refrains rub shoulders with riffs as direct and aggressive as ever, head-bobbing blast beats and dazzling solos. Of particular note is the Dantesque solo on 'Needlefeast', featuring Freak Kitchen guitar hero Mattias "IA" Eklundh. To be totally exhaustive in terms of prestigious guests, Mikael Akerfeld from Opeth sings the clear refrains of the eponymous final track.

"A Predator's Portrait" proves to be a truly revolutionary album, and thus an essential work of art. It's an opus with no downtime, opening the gates of glory for Soilwork, and one that will continue to accentuate this melodic evolution, much to the dismay of long-time fans.
