Barely a year after the release of "A Predator's Portrait", a real melodic turn in Soilwork's career, the Swedes are making their way by pushing the limits of a death melodic metal made in Soilwork. And this improvement is made possible with the arrival of the new keyboardist Sven Karlson (Evergrey), but especially of Devin Townsend as producer whose influence is felt on Björn "Speed" Strid's vocals as well as on the visuals with a clear cover and the butterflies so dear to the Canadian.

"Natural Born Chaos" gathers ten impressive compositions that have been polished to the last detail. The choruses of each track are heady and flirt with the sublime as on "No More Angles". The refrains at the limit of pop follow hardcore screams accompanying syncopated riffs aerated by omnipresent modern sounds on which come breaks announcing bewildering soli of technicality.

Of course, the recipe is less aggressive than in the beginning, which explains why some people now find it difficult to label Soilwork as an extreme band. That said, the energy is still there and the band proves that they are still a metal band and they make a point of justifying it on the nervous riffs of "Black Star Deceiver" with its worrying keyboards in the background.

There's no doubt that some will regret the speed/thrash side of the early days which has disappeared in favour of a very melodic Death Metal, but there's no doubt that "Natural Born Chaos", with its ten hits, is to this day THE ultimate Soilwork masterpiece and a must-have in any melodeath lover's record library.
