In 2002, the most famous progressive band in the world served us an ambitious double CD with a progressive "symphony"... A year later in 2003, they come back with the album that will divide the fans: Train of Thought. Indeed they decide here to return to a "more basic" metal.
The album opens with the powerful and heavy AS I AM, 8 minutes of ultra sharp guitars! Then we continue with THIS DYING SOUL, the song that comes closest to the old albums, not surprising when you consider that it is part of the Alcoholics Anonymous Suite, composed by Portnoy and dealing with his fight against alcoholism! Critics have often criticized the album for putting Myung's bass and Rudess' keyboards in the background, but the bass is predominant in this track with this famous motif that we find with pleasure in the 5 parts of the suite
ENDLESS SACRIFICE offers a devastating riff and a place for Rudess to show his talent. Even if the keyboard layers have almost disappeared from the album, this last one has lyrical and melodic flights that bring a cachet that we don't find in the other albums, except maybe in SDOIT... The lyrics were written by Petrucci and are dedicated to his wife and what she goes through on tour, when John is not at home but on stage. Then comes HONOR THY FATHER, a very violent track on which Portnoy declares his hatred to his father-in-law with shoutings on the choruses or recordings very symbolic family dramas...
Two songs actually make only one, because the theme of VANCANT, a very soft song contrasting with the rest of the album, is taken up and developed in the masterful STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS, an epic instrumental piece with an orgasmic ending! The album then ends on the monumental IN THE NAME OF GOD, a superb 15-minute piece denouncing the use of religion for "bad" ends, such as fanaticism or extremism...
This album is certainly a UFO in Dream Theater's discography, but what a UFO! The title of the album is very well chosen, because between alcoholism, Portnoy's anger and Petrucci's love, this album is a real "train of thoughts"! Listening to it several times is necessary in order to appreciate it at its true value, but it is really worth it, because it has qualities that no other album can claim to have. - Official website
