The Tea Club, an American group from Philadelphia, whose creators are two brothers, Patrick and Dan McGowan, delivers here a first album, "General Winter's Secret Museum" working in an Atmospheric Progressive Rock that could be described as seductive at first sight!

The first few seconds of the album are particularly pleasant with a guitar riff composed of a combination of notes that appeal to a particular sound and a bass input that raises the highest expectations for the rest. This first track, "Werewolves", is progressive with a dynamic progression before falling into a calm and twirling interlude that ends the song in an instrumental mix straight from an Oceansize album!

Nevertheless, if the first track is very interesting, the rest, although well made, still leaves some doubt. Just mention the second track, "Cool Smack", with its almost inaudible chorus! Maybe this reproach is a little subjective, but the choruses and more generally the song lines of The Tea Club are approximate and confusing. The use of choirs, mainly on the choruses, most of the time gives way to an auditory capernaum...

This black point being raised, it is nevertheless necessary to recognize a certain success among our Americans on the riffs that remind us of the best in Atmospheric Prog. The harmony between the atmosphere, the guitar riffs, the solos, the drums and the bass is at times breathtaking. "Big Al" is a striking example of this with a dynamic instrumental piece, featuring a superb guitar solo and above all an explosion around the fifth minute when the guitar gets excited on playful round-trip chords. "The Clincher" and its instrumental interlude where the drum rolls juxtapose harmoniously on the guitar parts is also a remarkable track.

On the other hand, other songs such as "Purple Chukz", "Will O' The Wisp", or "The Moon" are less convincing with a certain lack of feeling on the riffs and more particularly on the instrumental and atmospheric parts where magic has difficulty working.

To conclude, it is obvious that The Tea Club has potential but that it is unfortunately not being exploited in the best way! Probably with a little more work on the compositions, the vocal lines, this band could improve the whole and offer us in the future an album... amazing....

OTHER REVIEWS
RAMMSTEIN: Herzeleid (1995)
INDUSTRIAL METAL - Despite a sound that lacks a bit of modernity, "Herzeleid" is a real musical success and makes Rammstein a very efficient and powerful band.
AIRBAG: Identity (2009)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Very (too) close to Pink Floyd, "Identity" is slightly lacking in identity but this detail doesn't alter the pleasure we have in discovering such a successful first album!
