In 1997, the young band Within Temptation released their first album. Borrowing from the Gothic and the Doom a certain slowness/heaviness/depth/blackness, and the heavy of beautiful melodies all in power, this album (among others) announces the future explosion of the scene vulgarly called "metal with female singer" which will take place at the beginning of this millennium, for the better and sometimes for the worse.
Far from the lucrative call of the media (which will throw itself on Gothic imagery and all its promises), "Enter" is an exciting and authentic album but with defects. The growl vocals (although the term probably does not correspond perfectly to the reality) is difficult to bear, and imprecise. On top of that, the fairly cheap production is not up to the task. Plastic guitars and keyboards are better.
And yet. The vocal problem is quickly swept away by the performance of Sharon Den Adel, in a state of grace. Her lyrical but delicate song (unlike a certain Tarja, for example, who is very powerful) animates the compositions with force. And what compositions! If a 'Deep Within' (badly) sung by Rob is very anecdotal, other songs are still classics for old fans. The sublime and epic "Restless", "Enter", or "Candles" will give you shivers with Sharon's crystalline vocals. And how not to be charmed by the naivety of melodies like those of "Gatekeeper" or the instrumental "Blooded"? For the only time in their career, the band is focusing solely on melody, without complexes. As a result, some things seem a little outdated, but the album is nevertheless bewitching and imbued with a certain pure beauty.
The countless fans who knew "Enter" after the next ones will be surprised to discover what seems to be another band. The band itself seems to more or less deny this record by concert set-lists that regularly hide it. However, the qualities of the group that will allow them to compose hits are already present here, without artifice... - Official website
