"Not quite convincing yet, but of a much higher level than its elder, "Projects In The Jungle" lays the foundations of what will be Pantera."

Only one year after the anecdotal Metal Magic, the Texan panther refuses to give up: when rock is in your blood, there is no need to struggle! And only the bad tongues will dispute the fact that by dint of perseverance, Pantera starts to make itself a name.
"Projects In The Jungle" is first of all the explosion of a duo. The Abbott brothers reveal themselves for the first time on this album. By their obvious agreement, they create the backbone of the band, an indefectible structure which will last until this sad night of December 2004, on which we will not return. But what is the most determining, it is the beginnings of Thrash in California, a genre which will inspire our two protagonists.
Indeed, if the atmosphere is always with tight lycra and improbable perms, the glam is nuanced here with a ferocity coming from the West, saving evolution which authorizes the palpable emergence of an identity. Of course, all this is still very discreet, but listen to the solo of "All Over Tonight", or better, the title track, with its thundering intro and its angry riffs... Darrell's instrumental, "Blue Lite Turnin' Red", is a filthy mess that won't be remembered, but like "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)", it shows an obvious research and creativity. The title "Heavy Metal Rules" is also symptomatic of a started evolution which will not be denied any more.
For all that, the FM side is not put aside, and also benefits from progress in terms of writing. Thus, "Takin' My Life" has everything of a jukebox ballad, and "Like Fire" is a real 80's hit, formatted but with a formidable efficiency! Finally, we note that even the ballads benefit from soli, certainly classic, but of an irreproachable execution. Darrell creates the outline of a myth, and one comes to wonder how such a talent could have been ignored for so long. Still produced by Daddy Abbott, "Projects In The Jungle" is indeed shunned by all the labels in the region, and remains "only" a self-production. One can imagine what some record company bosses might have regretted, ten years later, when "Far Beyond Driven" hits the Billboard 200.
Not yet completely convincing, but of a much higher level than its elder, here is a very nice record, almost impossible to find nowadays physically, but which deserves all your attention... A little piece of history ! - Official website
