After the commercial and artistic success of "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", the Red Hot Chili Peppers go through a troubled period. John Frusciante leaves the band in 1992, during the Japanese tour, unable to face the enormous success of their previous album. He quickly falls into a drug addiction. At the same time, Flea separates from his wife. The band is in a mutation period, torn between drug problems, the difficulty of finding a replacement for Frusciante (who stayed only 3 years and 2 albums), and the difficulty of managing their hyper-mediatization. Salvation then seems to come from ex-Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, whom the band recruits and with whom he records "One Hot Minute" in 1995.
Although the mood is less fun than in the past, and the album much darker, it benefits from the band's notoriety and sells very well. With this new album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers complete their mutation, which has seen them evolve from unbridled, fiery Funk to high-energy Rock that is more in line with the expectations of a wide audience. This is largely due to Dave Navarro's sound, which is clearly more classic Hard Rock than that of his predecessor. Similarly, while the rhythm section is still an important element, it loses a little more of its omnipresence within the band's music. Finally, Anthony Kiedis' vocals become more melodic and mellow, and the guitars more epic and melodic.
The result is a series of simply excellent tracks, such as the single "Aeroplane" and "My Friends" (a ballad), the funky "Walkabout", the metal "Warped" and "Coffee Shop", all of which rank among the Red Hot Chili Peppers' best. However, "One Hot Minute" lacks the magic of its predecessors. The mood is less exhilarating and carefree, and we even get the feeling that the band has composed in reaction to the explosion of the Grunge movement, from which they seem to draw some of their inspiration. Drugs and the loss of loved ones seem to be the only preoccupations of a band trying to stay on course.
With 5 million albums sold, "One Hot Minute" received an excellent reception at the time, and is often cited by many fans as one of the band's best. However, Dave Navarro and Anthony Kiedis' drug addiction are to sound the death knell for this interlude in the band's career. The guitarist quickly jumped ship, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers turn once again to their former companion, John Frusciante, in an attempt to forget a period when excess nearly caused the group's demise. - Official website
