This mini-album is an original recording and yet listening seems to prove the opposite. The explanation is to be found in the concept of this disc.

The "Crying for help" series, the first 4 episodes of which can be found in "Songs from the lions cage" and the next 4 in "Pride", is originally a unique piece based on a theme and variations. The idea of using these variations as musical interludes between the longer compositions came about when Arena's first album was conceived.

Here we find original or reworked versions of seven of the "Crying for help", plus 3 real creations. For Arena fans, this record presents the interest of the collection and a small unpublished title "Isolation" which is the first creation of John Mitchell newly arrived in the band. Another curiosity is the presence of Steve Rothery (Marillion) on "Only Child".

This record is not to be recommended to anyone wishing to discover Arena because it is not at all representative of the group's music. There is hardly anything but the latest track "The Healer" that is a real composition in the progressive style. The rest, even pleasant to hear, leaves an impression of too little. You don't make a big album with little musics, no matter how pretty they may be.

Peut-être, mais il n'en demeure pas moins que cet album est excellent - j'avoue qu'étant fan, je manque peut-être un peu d'objectivité...

ARENA: Songs From The Lions Cage (1995)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Arena's first proper recording, "Songs From The Lions Cage" is an unqualified success, giving us the chance to discover a band that is sure to make a name for itself.
MARILLION: Anoraknophobia (2001)
ROCK - Far from the progressive rock of its beginnings, Marillion offers us with "Anoraknophobia" a sophisticated album while being accessible, beautiful and melancholic.
