"Even if Tambu doesn't offer much originality in Toto's career, it's still an excellent listening moment offered by a band still inspired by the 80s and 90s."

On August 5, 1992, Jeffrey Porcaro died of a heart attack. The death of Toto's drummer-founder plunged the band into disarray. How to continue without Jeff? Finally, after a few months of hesitation, David Paich, Steve Lukather and Mike Porcaro decided to continue the Toto adventure, "as Jeff would have wanted". They hire the Englishman Simon Phillips, a drummer who has participated in many prestigious projects with artists as varied as Peter Gabriel, Mike Oldfield, Camel or Judas Priest... Among the actors of the album Tambu, we find Steve Porcaro in the programming and the famous percussionist Lenny Castro.
Compared to Kingdom Of Desire, the sound is fuller (more compressed on the bass for example), the instrumentation less raw and the choirs more present. Steve Lukather is put forward, as well in his guitar playing which ensures most of the rhythmic support to the detriment of the keyboards, as vocals...
As for the compositions, there are no surprises; Tambu looks more towards IV than towards Isolation, Turn Back or Kingdom. The compositions are of good quality and we find with pleasure the quality of Toto's sound, always impeccable and balanced, with new touches of female vocals (Baby He's Your Man, Blackeye, The Turning Point), incursions towards rather groovy rhythms (Time Is The Enemy, Turning Point or Baby. ...), the inevitable ballads stamped Lukather (The Other End of Time, not bad, or Just Can't Get To You, boat), and also an excellent jazz-rock instrumental, 'Dave's Gone Skiing'. 'The Road Goes On' even shows a very good disposition to make a track evolve from a simply acoustic base to much more symphonic dressings. Simon Phillips integrated perfectly the group, his millimetre strike can also be musical (the beginning of I Will Remember) and very jazz on 'Dave's Gone Skiing'.
If this album, impeccably produced, doesn't offer much originality in Toto's career, Tambu remains however an excellent moment of listening, proposed by a band guaranteeing quality in the FM productions of the years 80-90. - Official website
