Soon after the huge slap in the face by The Last Sunset, Conception is back with Parallel Minds. While the first album let us think that the main battle horse of the band would be the metal/flamenco mix, we are surprised to realize that these exotic sounds have almost disappeared to give way to a much more traditional progressive metal.

Beware, we mustn't confuse everything, it's not because we say traditional that Conception melts into the mass. We are still here in the presence of a band well beyond its competitors. Conception's sound is now immediately identifiable, thanks to R.Khan's magnificent voice and especially to T.Ostby's supercharged playing which illuminates everything he touches.

The album starts strong with a powerful and rather fast track while remaining quite melodic. 'Roll The Fire' remains one of the best tracks the band has ever composed, more mid tempo. This straightforward and rather uncluttered track exposes the talent of the musicians, who show us that it is not necessary to have a very sophisticated music to attract attention.

The songs follow one another without losing quality. Very heavy titles follow the ballads and the whole is carried by sophisticated melodies and guitar playing from another world. Some songs are more progressive than others, like the magnificent Parallel Minds which reminds a little bit the Dream Theater of 'Images And Words'. The inexplicable riff of My Decision alone justifies the purchase of such an album and reminds us of T.Ostby's particular taste for mammoth riffs. The album ends with the heavy 'Wolf's Lair' followed by an epic 'Soliloquy' where calm and angry passages alternate: nine beautiful minutes during which the listener's attention remains maximum.

With Parallel Minds, Conception proves that he has several cards in his hand. Not only do they have a guitar genius whose particularly rich playing immediately hits the bull's eye, but these Norwegians know how to write an excellent progressive metal album, powerful, melodic and above all very personal. Conception forged an identity from the first album and renews itself just enough for its second offering. Of course, we regret the magnificent acoustic guitar passages, but we can only bow to the approach of a band as sure of itself as gifted.

MELODIC HARD ROCK - "Wait" is a varied melodic rock album that brilliantly succeeds in making something new out of something old.
