Surfing on the wave of success, Saga continues to make its way and releases its third album after so many years, featuring a Silent Knight with a design more than similar to the one of its predecessor. Once this first graphic analogy is over, what about the content? If the characteristics of Don't Be Late - which opens the album - remind immediately the essential style of the band, the ears of the listener feel immediately that there is a little something more compared to the previous albums, this something which will make all the difference.
The setting of the instruments is simply perfect: the osmosis between Steve Negus - with his always more inspired performance - and his rhythmic colleague (but not only) Jim Crichton jumps out at you. As for Jim Gilmour, he has finally refined his keyboard sounds, removing the last "Bontempi" scoriae, to offer us a shimmering spectrum. Ian Crichton still holds dynamite in his fingers, and his precision is marvelous (Too Much To Lose for example), especially when it comes to accompanying the keyboards, or even interacting with them in a kind of four-handed ping-pong. And then, with this third lift, Paul Gross has again taken his production quality up a notch, giving a dimension both spatial and totally balanced to the whole.
But all this would be nothing without good compositions: and there again, Saga has outdone himself. Apart from the hits Don't Be Late and Careful Where You Step, no track weakens the quality of the whole, the melodies being anchored in the head from the first listening. As for the instrumental passages, far from being simple filler parts to stick to the style of the band, they bring a pleasure constantly renewed ... even after 25 years of listening (Help Me Out is for this reason a marvel!).
You will have understood, with this third production, Saga comes close to the artistic summits, and gets closer to those of the fame which was not long to come.
