"One Hour By The Concrete Lake" is the second album of Pain Of Salvation but can be considered as their first real work. Indeed their previous opus, "Entropia", was only a collection of tracks composed during the different gestation periods. Let's remember that for the recording of "One Hour By The Concrete Lake", the formation is brand new since a big disagreement with the rest of the band left the Gildenlow brothers alone at the controls.
Despite their relative youth, Pain Of Salvation already shows on this album that they are part of an elite. The progressive/fusion metal style that we will find on their masterpiece "Perfect Element" is mastered and already shows a certain efficiency.
Out of the ordinary voice going from low to high without effort, alternation of raging riffs and acoustic movements, devastating power ups, fast synth/piano are the most common elements that you will find throughout your listening. But to all this is always added a touch of originality typical of Pain Of Salvation, which can be embodied by opera choirs or by an unusual rhythmic.
Of course, "One Hour By The Concrete Lake" is not as accomplished as its successor, but the sound, the clever mix between complexity and melody as well as these famous aggressive parts that fade away in the second to be replaced by a fluidity and a harmony against the current impress in the same way.
Pain Of Salvation offers us with this album an hour of energetic, powerful and varied music. Maybe a little less easy to access than their following albums and a little less gripping, an effort will be necessary to be able to fully impregnate the multi-faceted constructions and appreciate all the technical prowess. - Official website
