Keeping up a fast and steady pace, Primal Fear returned in early 2001 with their third album, "Nuclear Fire". Meanwhile, guitarist Tom Naumann has left the band, to be replaced by Henny Wolter, Naumann's colleague in Matt Sinner's solo band (bass). This third album sees the band return to practically the same musical recipe with muscular power heavy metal. Of course, the eagles are present on the apocalyptic cover, and the Metal Commands Germany on the inner sleeve leaves no doubt as to the band's musical direction.

Like its predecessors, "Nuclear Fire" gets off to a relentless start. The trio of 'Angel In Black', 'Kiss Of Death' and 'Back From Hell' exude enormous power and deliver superb choruses. Scheepers is imperial, especially on 'Back From Hell', where he gets ultra-violent on the verses, while the duo Wolter - Leibing is sharp on every riff and solo. After this muscular start, the band cleverly alternates slower tracks with purely heavy ones. Some very good mid-tempo tracks calm things down: 'Now Or Never', for example, is quite dark, with well-used keyboards, a heavy riff and more sedate vocals. Primal Fear even dares a ballad, 'Bleed For Me', in the great tradition of Germanic metal, for a pleasant but surprising result from a band we didn't necessarily expect on this terrain.

Tracks such as 'Fight The Fire', 'Red Rain' and 'Fire On The Horizon' take the powerful path between Thrash and power metal, ending with a few hits at the end of the disc, starting with the eponymous track, undoubtedly the band's best since its inception, which is a melodic speed metal bomb that would make Gamma Ray or Helloween green with envy, followed by 'Iron Fist In A Velvet Glove', an unusual composition for Primal Fear, more hard rock in style and superbly sung. Finally, with 'Living For Metal', the band has composed a veritable hymn to the glory of heavy metal, and pulls it off with class not far from the great moments of Manowar.

With this album, Primal Fear signs a great album of melodic heavy metal. By blending power and melody on highly inspired tracks, the band delivers a very homogeneous and intelligent record, one of the best in the genre at the start of this decade.

OTHER REVIEWS
WATAIN: Lawless Darkness (2010)
BLACK METAL - Lawless Darkness exudes an incredible darkness, creeping, almost palpable, that Watain has the intelligence not to express only through a Black Metal too concerned with codes.
JADIS: More Than Meets The Eye (1992)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - "More Than Meets The Eye" is a superb achievement and can be considered today as one of the pillars of (neo) progressive rock history
