Threshold, an English band formed at the end of the 80's, released their first opus, "Wounded Land" in 1993 on the Giant label. Be careful, the edition reviewed here is the 1993 one with Damian Wilson on vocals and not the 2001 reissue with Glynn Morgan.
One of the pioneers of Progressive Metal, Threshold offers here an album that is quite far from the standards of the time, which privileged the technique to the melody. If the construction of the tracks is in the standard of the progressive of the 90's, there are however no instrumental digressions like we can find in Dream Theater for example. The alternation between powerful passages, sometimes very heavy, and calmer moments, more aerial, emphasizes the melodic richness of the whole.
The rhythmic section is simple and efficient, allowing the guitars to free themselves and to offer numerous arpeggios and thirds which bring to each title its batch of melodies and originality. No demonstration, it is the piece which takes precedence and the result of the whole prevails on the personal musical technique.
Finally, let's talk about Damian Wilson's vocals, an element that allows Threshold to stand out from other bands. Rather in the highs, the voice always keeps a warmth and an emotional charge quite intense. Sometimes at the limit of the break ('Mother Earth'), Damian Wilson sings with his heart and you can hear it.
"Wounded Land" is finally a very consensual album. Rich and simple at the same time, it will delight the lovers of melodic metal and those of progressive. An album which is part of these records that we always keep in our favorites and that we regularly listen to again with, each time, this same renewed pleasure. - Official website
