One year after "Fly To The Rainbow", Scorpions continue to evolve, starting with its line-up which welcomes a new drummer in the person of Rudy Lenners whose dynamism and inventiveness stimulate Francis Buchholz, his colleague in the rhythm section, and helps the Hanoverian combo to go to a higher level.
It must be said that the Germans' psychedelic rock begins to gain muscle and to put a foot in melodic hard rock. 'Speedy's Coming' opened the way on the previous album, and the tracks of this genre multiply on "In Trance", with an introductory 'Dark Lady' that sees Klaus Meine and Uli Jon Roth sharing the vocals, the latter alternately roaring or mewing his guitar while the rhythm section breathes a particularly catchy groove. In the same style, 'Top Of The Bill' has a direct, repetitive and hypnotising riff, although it seems to hesitate on its final part. Finally, Schenker and Meine deliver a dynamic and catchy 'Robot Man'.
The other must-have track on this album is the eponymous 'In Trance' which introduces the power ballad style, alternating melancholic verses and percussive choruses, and while Meine confirms that he is indeed a talented singer, the pair of guitarists deliver a double solo with beautiful harmonies.
It's a pity that the rest of the album is less percussive, Scorpions multiplying ballads which are certainly pleasant, but less unforgettable, 'Living And Dying' even suffering from verses with repetitive lyrics which make this track a bit painful in the long run. However, we'll remember the blues rock of 'Sun In My Hand' on which Roth confirms his German Hendrix status, while the album ends gently on a soft instrumental 'Night Lights'.
Still suffering from a few teething problems, this "In Trance" marks a notable evolution and could even be considered as a pivotal album of Scorpions, its inventiveness and the development of its more aggressive side showing glorious horizons. Here is an opus which, if it is not fundamentally indispensable, is nevertheless a founding act that will mark the nascent history of the Scorpions. - Official website
