"With "Fiendish", Phideaux offers us an album between Neo Progressive and Atmospheric Rock, privileging emotion over originality or technique."

Phideaux is a one-man band iniated by Xavier Phideaux, an American multi-instrumentalist who, as his name does not indicate, propose songs leaning somewhat towards neo-progressive and atmospheric Rock. This character has a very particular way of distributing his works since he proposes them as free downloads on his website or in CD format for a fee. Donations are of course welcome.
"Fiendish" is the second solo album of this musician and, in his style, it is obvious that it is a success. As a whole, this album comes across as a beautiful and relatively intimate piece of work with an emphasis on emotion rather than originality or technique. Thus, the majority of the tracks are Rock songs or ballads with an extremely simple structure and only the general atmosphere, the use of vocals and choirs, as well as the keyboards or the guitar sounds, will push to give the label "progressive" to this album. Although the whole is certainly homogeneous, one appreciates the rhythm of '100 Mg', the barely restrained snarl of 'Little Monster', while taking the melancholy of 'Headstones' and 'Spacebrother' in the face.
In many ways, Phideaux's work is similar to that of two other musicians we've already mentioned on Music Waves: John Wesley and Steven Wilson. But unlike the former, the effort made here is on the diversity of the tracks. "Fiendish" is an album that can be listened to like a classic album or that of an American songwriter: alone, in your sofa, without doing anything else than drinking every word and every note of a talented artist. - Official website
