Don't know Proto-Kaw? Not surprising, since "Before Became After" is only their debut album. What is a little more surprising is to realize that Proto-Kaw has been around for many years. A quick glance at the band's line-up will provide some semblance of an answer, since Kerry Livgren, who worked with Kansas, is present here on guitars.

It would be extremely simplistic to claim that "Before Became After" will only appeal to those nostalgic for the great albums such as "Song For America" or "Leftoverture". Proto-Kaw is not a copy of Kansas, far from it. Obviously, the influences are the same, but many aspects give it its own personality, starting with the use of oriental instruments on "Leaven", for example.

Of course, there's no escaping Kerry Livgren's secret ballads. The track 'Axolotl', for example, will make you cry plagiarism, while die-hard fans will be delighted to rediscover the bygone era of 'Dust In The Wind'. Surprises include 'Quantum Leapfrog', with its jazzy harmonies and rhythms that are almost disturbing at first sight, and, above all, the river song 'Theophany', which is worth listening to this album in its own right.

Some may ask, what's the point of having a second Kansas? Firstly, because "Before Became After" differs from this legendary band in many ways, but above all because it rises to the level of "Point Of Know Return", which is more than enough to make it a recommendable opus.
