"Lightbulb Sun" is the album that made me discover Porcupine Tree and by the way the talent of Steven Wilson, the leader and composer of this amazing band. Produced in only 3 months, it is the worthy successor of "Stupid Dream" but more complex. A lot of work has been done on the unique keyboard sounds and arrangements. According to Steven Wilson, "Lightbulb Sun" is the most honest and emotional album the band has ever released. A few grams of finesse in a rough world?
To sum up the music of "Lightbulb Sun", one has to imagine a condensed version of all Radiohead's periods (from OK Computer to Kid A) associated with the atmosphere of a Pink Floyd. The result is grandiose, with tracks ranging from progressive to indie style. The meticulous production gives importance to all the instruments and musical notes to achieve a certain sonic perfection. The smooth and soft vocals reinforce the melancholic side of the melodies.
A lot of arrangements in the vocals like Anathema in alternative 4, very different guitar sounds according to the tracks, going from distorted to acoustic, violins, a very present bass and atmospheric synths make this album a sheer marvel. The melodies, simple at first sight, remain in your head long after you have been listening to them and you start humming them.
The result of this record with such an easily assimilated content coming from a band not really known at the time is more than surprising. While it could easily hold the first place of many charts, one wonders why the record companies don't make more effort to bring out albums of such quality. As with Anathema, one can only regret this lack of confidence, or even opportunism of the radio stations or production companies who do not see where the interest of all lies. - Official website
