Syndone is an Italian band that was born in 1990. Constituted around the pianist and composer Nik Comoglio, the band recorded "Spleen" (1992) and "Inca" (1993) before falling back into oblivion. With "Melapesante", Nik Comoglio makes Syndone rise from its ashes with a completely renewed line-up. Between 1993 and 2010, Nik Comoglio has not remained inactive since he has released several solo albums, written film music, jingles for advertising, arranged Jacques Brel's songs for a theatrical show retracing the life of the Belgian singer, composed for various artists, including classical ones, and has gone so far as to commit an opera inspired by Pinocchio, "Anima Di Legno".
An eclecticism which is found in the music of "Melapesante". For this album, far from being a long quiet river, shows a beautiful diversity which should delight the most demanding music lovers in search of strong emotions. Thus the amateurs of contemporary classical music will be able to enjoy "Allegro Feroce", in which a piano reminding Satie twirls on layers of viola and cellos, or "Malo In Adversity" with a jerky and pressed piano which refers to Debussy, Ravel or, closer to us, to Art Zoyd, before introducing a brass chorus worthy of Gershwin.
Then it's time for jazz-rock in tracks such as "Mela Pensante" and "Mela Di Tell" interspersed with improvised instrumental mini-breaks. The group approaches then with the same happiness of magnificent progressive titles to the sensitive melodies ("Melapesante", "Magritte", "Dentro L'Inconscio"), makes a wink to the American musicals ("Mela Pensante") and closes the album with a boogie worthy of the elucidations of a Keith Emerson in big shape ("4 Hands Piano Boogieprog").
The finesse of the compositions, neither too smooth, nor too intellectual, is very well highlighted by the playing of Nik Comoglio who privileges the sensitivity to a useless demonstration of technicality and draws from his keyboards a broad sound palette which reinforces the impression of variety of the titles. Finally, it is impossible not to mention the vocal performance of Riccardo Ruggeri. This singer sublimates the tracks with his theatrical, but not too forced, vocals, a mix of a Peter Hammill and a transalpine Freddie Mercury, able to pass quickly from rocky eructations to a great sweetness, and even to imitate the time of a title the post-rock style of Sigur Ros.
Syndone proves to be an excellent surprise at the beginning of 2011 and is already positioned to be among the top 5 of Music Waves. In any case, a discovery that every progressive music lover must make. - Official website
