"Between The Devil And The Deep Blue See" is unfortunately too calibrated for U.S. radio stations with titles that are a bit light."

Remember..., it was in 2006 and Black Stone Cherry released its first album, eponymous by the way, and the Rock world was then taking a little slap from these young Americans. Since then, the band has continued to grow, tour and establish its credibility with "Folklore And Superstition" in 2008. To say that they were expected at the turn with this new offering is a sweet euphemism.
Produced by Howard Benson (Motörhead, Sepultura...) and with an artwork suggesting darker things, the album starts under the best auspices with a direct and deliciously dirty "White Trash Millionaire". Chris Robertson's inimitable voice is still as raspy on a riff that would fit like a glove with the Black Label Society. The production is colossal and the track will be a hit live. "Killing Floor" follows with the same energy in a good old Southern Hard Rock style.
But after a good "In My Blood" close to Lynyrd Skynyrd, then come "Won't Let Go", "I Like Roll" and "Can't You See" (among others), some tracks which are very classical and very easy to forget. We sometimes think of the weakest and most marshmallowy tracks of a Mike Tramp era "More To Life Than This" (with the big sound on top of it) or the most consensual of Nickelback's tracks. And what to say about the final "Die For You" with its silly lyrics. "All I'm Dreamin' Of", a southern and acoustic ballad very Skynyrd sounds pretty good (in the vein of the previous album) and stands out in the middle of this nonsense. The album is thus punctuated by a few tracks which in the middle of it all look like nuggets, like "Change", more dynamic and honest, "Such A Shame", or the excellent "Blame It On The Boom Boom" and its addictive backing vocals, but the majority seems calibrated for US radios and above all too light...
What a pity! Even if Black Stone Cherry's concerts always remain a pleasure, the fans will be waiting for the next production on which, we hope, the band will find all the bite that made its rapid fame. - Official website
