After "Low" which had already seen them harden their music, Testament continues the radicalization with "Demonic" which, in 1997, is the most powerful album of the Californians. Testament becomes even more brutal and unhealthy through heavier and grating guitars, and especially through Chuck Billy whose growl evolves in a style very close to Death Metal. The arrival of Gene Hoglan (ex-Death) on drums is not insignificant either in view of this evolution.

The result is quite impressive and gives to listen to a raging band that manages to successfully reconcile quality of compositions and aggressiveness of atmospheres. We are not in gratuitous and primary violence, but well within the framework of the expression of extremely strong feelings. The refrains are catchy and the melodies well constructed even if the following album will do even better.

It's hard to resist a track as furious as 'Demonic Refusal' which, after a gloomy intro, crushes everything on its way.  The same is true for 'The Burning Times' with its constant rhythm changes or for the very Death, 'Jun-Jun'... The band almost manages to make a flawless album and the redundant or dispensable tracks are really marginal. At most, we can mention the less memorable 'Ten Thousand Thrones', 'Nostrovia' and 'Distorted Lives'.

On this "Demonic", Testament doesn't know any decrease in quality. And if its image of classic Thrash band from the 80's certainly didn't help it to conquer the public that such an album was likely to capture at that time, it is undeniable that from an artistic point of view the band has masterly negotiated its evolution. And this "Demonic", only announces the even more enjoyable "The Gathering" which will be released two years later...

THE WHO: The Who By Numbers (1975)
ROCK - Often considered by critics as the Who's darkest album, "The Who By Numbers" is certainly not a must-have, but it still offers some very good Rock tracks.
PAIN OF SALVATION: Road Salt Two (2011)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - Alter-ego of Road Salt One, this second part is a new stone that adds to the magnificent musical edifice built by one of the best bands of the beginning of the 21st century.
