First album released under the name of Korpiklaani, "Spirit Of The Forest" was released at the end of 2003 and finally came barely a year after "Shamaniac", the Finnish band's second album, released when they were still called Shaman. The band chose to change their name and their musical style. On this album, they incorporated Metal elements into their original folk music and now sing in English. They follow in the footsteps of Finntroll, with whom the guitarist and singer, Jonne Järvelä, worked a short time before.

We discover a Folk Metal band already well established, reminding us of Finntroll as well as Mago De Oz or Skyclad. Korpiklaani pays a nice tribute to the music of yesteryear by mixing it with Heavy Metal passages through good dynamic tracks such as 'Wooden Pint', 'God Of Wind' or 'Shaman Drum' which wonderfully mix traditional instruments and guitars, on which a typical hoarse vocal is laid, smelling of pagan rites and the call of nature. Korpiklaani also offers calmer tracks close to traditional music and to what Shaman proposed. 'With Trees' and its 8 minutes is a splendid return to the pagan and folk sources which takes us to the depths of the Finnish forests, just like 'Mother Heart' which closes this record perfectly.

"Spirit Of The Forest" is a great success, combining power, softness, melody and melancholy. Korpiklaani launches the second part of their career with brilliance and efficiency and places themselves directly in the leading group of the folk metal movement which is taking off in the early 2000's with Finntroll and Moonsorrow.
