What's new at Anathema? The release of "Weather Systems", just two years after the excellent "We're Here Because We're Here", shows that the band has entered a phase of stability since its integration into the K-Scope team. Clearly located in the continuation of its predecessor, this album continues to dig the same atmospheric groove, with superb melodies served by excellent vocalists, Vincent Cavanagh and Lee Douglas (officially integrated into the line-up).

The melodic vein, always so obvious in Anathema, allows an almost instantaneous grip when listening. The compositions often start from a simply exposed theme that is enriched by the contribution of successive layers, a process that the band has used since many albums and that it masters to perfection, as shown by the two parts of 'Untouchable', magnificently held and highlighted by an impeccable production. Still no instrumental digression, just those vocal lines ideally placed on a piano or acoustic guitar, then that fly away as they become more complex. The end of 'The Storm Before the Calm' even has symphonic accents in the style of Phideaux that fans will appreciate.

However, sad minds will regret a style that always focuses on the same recipes. Thus, 'Lightning Song' and 'Sunlight' give off a little bit of "already listened" in the band's discography. But the moods remain as strong as ever and the magic works most often, touching us with its romanticism ('The Lost Child') or its melancholy ('Internal Landsapes' and its richer rhythmic).

So there is no great surprise in this "Weather Systems", but a quality of writing that is refined and polished over time. It would be a shame to miss this album, a sure value of an atmospheric rock of great quality.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Last elusive work of an unusual band, "Noctourniquet" renews with a freshness and an energy reminiscent of At The Drive-In with the psychedelism of the 70's and the modernity of the sounds.
