"Threshold does Threshold in this "Subsurface", a progressive metal album as melodic and accessible as ever."

For more than ten years, Threshold has been delivering new albums at a steady pace, and the vintage never seems to run dry. 2004 is no exception to the rule, with "Subsurface", which, let's face it, is unlikely to upset the band's regulars or the progressive world in general.
Indeed, anyone who has been following Threshold since "Clone" will notice a kind of continuity, with no major evolution or change of style. Mac's voice, paradoxically common as it is in a neutral register and yet so original in the context, powerful and ideally used, works wonders on progressive compositions that are, all in all, fairly obvious but almost always percussive.
The contribution of electronic sounds, begun on "Critical Mass", is more precise and better employed here. The slightly cheesy ballads have been ped in favor of faster, more aggressive tracks, offering atmospheric, liberating keyboard lulls (synth and piano).
Threshold does Threshold, we've known that for a long time, but they do it well. Once again, the result is a very good, well-balanced and effective progressive metal album. If you're not familiar with this band, it's time to fill the gap and check out one of their albums, whether it's "Subsurface" or another, as they're all so good overall. - Official website
