While it should be easy, reviewing a Nile album is a more difficult exercise than it seems. The band, faithful to high quality standards, can hardly be attacked, both in substance and in form. Nile has a very personal and recognizable universe that he has gradually established whose main characteristics are based both on this theme imbued with the ancient Egypt and this ultra technical Death Metal performed by monsters of virtuosity.
'At The Gate Of Sethu' thus takes up where 'Those Whom The God Detest' left them three years ago, erecting a pyramidal temple with a tight mesh and an incredible tension. Beyond Nile's customary technical supremacy, what still strikes us as much as ever are these dark, almost oppressive atmospheres ("The Fiends Who Comes To Seal The Magick Of The Deceased") distilled by this infernal interweaving of guitars as well as this work on vocals, with multiple tessitura, alternately venomous or rumbling, by Sanders and Dallas Toler-Wade.
Marked by discreet tribal arabesques, in the form of instrumental interludes ("Slaves Of Xul" then "Ethno Musicological Cannibalisms") or introductions ("The Chaining Of The Iniquitous"), the album offers a menu of an unusual breadth in the genre, sometimes almost cinematic, like the reptilian "When My Wrath Is Done" or "The Gods Who Light Up The Sky At The Gate Of Sethu".
Collected and dense, complex and of secular intensity, these titles are built on a superposition of strata that do not alter in any way their annihilation capacity. If only one example had to be given, it would undoubtedly be "Supreme Humanism Of Megalomania", struck down by George Kollias' monstrous space-eating drums at the same time as the theatre of six-string demo lines between compressor rollers and supersonic perforations.
If he doesn't invent (anymore) anything, at least Nile doesn't weaken in terms of brutality. 'At The Gate Of Sethu' is a good pick, but certainly not the masterpiece of its authors, whose creative peak has long since been reached... - Official website
