"Even better than its predecessor, "Hatebreeder" takes neo-classical experimentation one step further, allowing Children Of Bodom to enter the pantheon of the genre's legendary bands."

The virtuosos of Children Of Bodom return two years after their first opus, "Something Wild", which was one of the most pleasant surprises of 1997. As you don't change a winning team, the line-up remains the same for this album, which is barely longer than the previous one. Released by Nuclear Blast, the album cover features a familiar face, shifting from the red of "Something Wild" to a much cooler green. It's our grim reaper, Roy, showing us the way to the shores of Lake Bodom...

Introduced by the excellent 'Warheart', with its sublime alternation of binary and ternary patterns, vertiginous solos and skilfully placed vocal parts, 'Hatebreeder' challenges the listener from the outset to choose between it and the previous album. 'Silent Night Bodom Night", the band's anthem, which they enjoy playing at every gig, is an example of neo-classicism. Where some bands would be proud to have an outstanding solo, Children Of Bodom uses it as the musical phrasing of a bridge or verse. 'Hatebreader', 'Bed Of Razors' and 'Black Widow' also contribute to the high quality of this album. Considered one of the world's finest metal keyboardists, Janne "Warman" Wirman delivers solos like no one else, and outbids the guitarists who stand in his way.

Concluded by the haunting 'Children Of Bodom' and 'Downfall', "Hatebreed" is close to perfection. While many Death Metal bands could be criticized for composing tracks that sound too similar, this is not the case here. The Finns of Children Of Bodom are inspired and offer just as many variations in the tracks and guitar and keyboard solos. "Hatebreed" is quite simply a must-have for melodic death/black metal.
