"Despite some of the tracks being a little too obvious, 'Hate Crew Deathroll' is still a good album from Children Of Bodom."

In the space of three albums and one live show, Children Of Bodom have completely turned the small world of metal on its head with their cocktail of neo-classical heavy, death and black metal. "Follow The Reaper", the 3rd album released in 2000 and produced by Peter Tägtgren, confirmed the quintet's extraordinary talent. In fact, the wait for their 4th opus, "Hate Crew Deathroll", was a long one, as the band won over so many listeners who were impatient to get their hands on this new offering.

The album took almost a year to write, with a new producer at the helm. It reveals a band that has matured and is a little less exuberant in its duets of keyboards and guitars. The formula remains the same, with a few heavier, thrashier passages making their appearance.

You'd be lying if you didn't have a great time listening to this very short album, 9 tracks in 36 minutes. Because 'Needled 24/7', 'Bodom Beach Terror', 'Angel Don't Kill' and 'You're Better Off Dead' are superb tracks cut from the best of Children Of Bodom. These songs are ultra-fast but with many melodic and technical touches that make the difference, reminiscent of the explosiveness of Impaled Nazarene. Wirman and Laiho are still at an incredible level, distilling riffs and solos with enormous class.

But, for the first time in their career, Children Of Bodom disappoint with more generic heavy tracks. 'Lil' Bloodred Ridin' Hood', 'Triple Corpse Hammerblow' and 'Sixpounder', for example, are fairly noisy and very common. The band applies its formula literally and the Thrash elements don't necessarily fit in well with their identity.

In spite of everything, "Hate Crew Deathroll" is still a solid album from a band who have shown so much quality and are so capable of doing better. Children Of Bodom remains a rising force on the extreme music scene, and this album will have no trouble selling well.
