There are times when you wish you could just throw it all away and start over. That's more or less what John Crosby, head of Vast, did when he split with his band, his manager and his label just before devoting himself to this album. Vast then arrived at InsideOut, a label that is now a must in the progressive scene, a surprising choice considering what we can hear in this "Nude".

Indeed, don't look for progressive inspiration in this album, there is none. It's towards the constructions close to the FM standards that one should rather turn. Most of the tracks do what they were written to do, which is to touch the listener on the first listen and make them want to listen again. There is no need to look for originality. Each track refers to one or another band from the pop/rock scene, notably to U2, especially at the beginning of the album when Crosby's vocals are modelled on Bono's ('Turquoise', 'Thrown Away'). The rest of the album is less focused and we find, for example, a bit of Coldplay ('Lost') or even The Cure ('Candle').

Electric guitars and electronics are very well combined in this "Nude" with easily assimilated songs, very often punchy and above all catchy. A few samples, a bit of violin ('Don't Take Your Love Away'), some strong rhythms and that's it.

Those who are not allergic to simple constructions based on verse/chorus will be pleasantly surprised by what Vast offers. The others will go their own way.

MOONGARDEN: The Gates Of Omega (2001)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - If you appreciate progressive rock when it oscillates between light and shade, between the too-predictable neo of the south and the too-icy ambient of the north, Moongarden's "The Gates Of Omega" should satisfy you.
ESQARIAL: Inheritance (2004)
DEATH METAL - If the guitar lovers will get their share in this "Inheritance", the fans of extreme Metal in search of new sensations as well as the amateurs of progressive could well be pleasantly surprised.
