Now reduced to the rank of side-project to which his authors (Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness) visit at irregular intervals, No-Man has known for about ten years an episodic career where studio albums (only two during this period) alternate between EP (Wherever There Is Light), compilation (All The Blue Changes) and DVD (Mixtaped). As much as we regret it, this band can be considered as the most precious creation of Tim Bowness.
While waiting for the successor of a Schoolyard Ghosts already dating back to 2008, Love And Endings fills a gap in the band's career in that it is its first official live testimony both audio and video. Only the CD version will be mentioned in this review. Captured on October 14, 2011 at the Leamington Spa Assembly, the object sums up No-Man's 25-year career in nine compositions. However, when one knows the richness of his repertoire, reducing it to such a small handful of compositions will necessarily lead to disappointment, waiting here for a "Only Rain" or there for a "Photographs In Black And White", which are therefore conspicuous by their absence.
More than a balanced overview, Love And Endings is a snapshot of what the band is today, which also offers a new track, "Beaten By Love" where Bowness' muffled voice and Wilson's saturated six-string combine. The concert starts with two excerpts from Wild Opera (1996), the intimate "My Revenge On Seattle" and "Time Travel In Texas", a dark pulse crossed by a round bass and Ambient guitar riffs carried by the dandy singer and his irresistible suave vocals. A third track from this album appears on the program, "Pretty Genius", a little nugget all in ambiences.
But maybe it's when No-Man picks (too little) in his last offerings that it gives shivers, witness the magnificent versions of the grandiose "All The Blue Changes" and its poignant rise in power of beauty, or "Mixtaped" which allows Steven Wilson to give free rein to his playing always on the verge of breaking up, without forgetting "Lighthouse", with its ramshackle violin lines. Let's also note the solid instrumental foundation of the musicians accompanying the tandem, from Steve Bingham to Pete Morgan, all impeccable. Taken from Flowermouth, "Things Change" closes the concert in beauty, between a soft first part and a finale of God's fire.
Indispensable for those who cherish this all too rare band, let's cross our fingers so that, as its title might suggest, this live is not the testament of its authors... - Official website
