Swedish Family is a band straight out of the brain of Tomas Bodin (keyboard of Flower Kings). "Vintage Prog" is a compilation of the 10 imaginary albums released between 1969 and 1978 and retracing the history of this "mythical" band which doesn't exist.
Of course, the so-called temporal gap between the tracks is undetectable. The production and the sound in general is remarkable (even on "From The Foot", officially released in 1969). The homogeneous whole doesn't illustrate at all what the composer wanted (with humour) to make us believe and it's a good thing because we have here a coherent record, developing some themes over its whole duration. The mix of genres (progressive, folk, traditional music) brings an indispensable freshness to an entirely instrumental album.
Unquestionably, Tomas Bodin has done a big work of composition here. The themes follow one another with lightness and the only reproach that one could put forward, would relate to the slight lack of energy and the absence of a singer. However, like Peter Gabriel with the soundtrack of "The Last Temptation of Christ", one appreciates the quality of the melodies with a perfect balance between sensitivity and sound harmonies (due essentially to the successful marriage between Hammon keyboards, Mini Moog... and traditional instruments). "A Waltz About Sadness" is a brilliant illustration of this. One will also note the magnificent work of the guitarist with his fluid playing who flies over the album with discretion and intelligence ("From the Foot"). Each track is a real treat for the listener, the band never falling into technical demonstration but always working for the melody.
Even if this record is neither very original nor impressive of virtuosity, it proves to be touching by its fresh and restful side. Everything is axed on harmony and the incredible feeling of the musicians. Vintage Prog shines by its generosity and flawless quality of execution. Except for "Brunos Erotica", slightly offbeat and experimental, Tomas Bodin offers here a little jewel of tenderness with inspired melodies.
