With its first two albums, Blind Guardian made good drafts, with promising passages but without being able to rise and cross the threshold that separates it from the legendary melodic metal bands. "Tales From The Twilight World", which is released at the end of 1990, very quickly after "Follow The Blind", looks like a big gamble, as the German band has to confirm their ambitions.
No need to make the suspense last as this opus outperforms its two predecessors and finally launches the band's career. The butterfly hatches, Hansi Kürsch finally masters his vocals while his fellow guitarists get off the beaten track of heavy-speed by widely varying their performance. The album is still very marked by the seal of speed-metal, the tone is very fast and leaves little time to breathe, but by bringing out the epic and melodic aspects, and by introducing choirs on choruses particularly worked, Blind Guardian gains a huge extra soul and becomes a fascinating storyteller. If we add a beautiful cover, signed Andreas Marschall, bewitching and introducing an enchanting universe and propitious to travel, we can say with force that we have the first building of an edifice that has all the ingredients to be beautiful.
Out of the 9 tracks it contains, "Tales From The Twilight World" includes no less than 5 great songs, 5 perfect tracks that will become the classics of the band and that we will remember for a long time after their listening. "Traveler In Time", "Welcome To Dying", "Goodbye My Friend" and "Lost In The Twilight Hall" are real nuggets both powerful and melodic, with splendid vocal harmonies and choruses of a quality rarely reached in the style. In a calmer style, "Lord Of The Rings" is a great success that confirms the interest of the band in Tolkien's work and this track, with medieval influences and carried by a splendid acoustic melody, opens up beautiful perspectives as we can feel Kürsch at ease in this style. The latter sings as he had never done before and in one record, ranks among the best singers of melodic heavy metal.
However, everything is not yet perfect and there are still things to improve. Blind Guardian, and it is logical, still offers weaker tracks, too typical classic speed. Thus, "Altair 4" and "Tommynockers" do not remain memorable. Despite this, "Tales From The Twilight World" lets us think that a future giant is born. This 3rd album of Blind Guardian looks like a classic of the genre and places the band at the top of the melodic metal planet. - Official website
