With the release of the live album "Tokyo Tales", Blind Guardian has closed a very well first chapter of his career. We now feel the Germans ready to take a new step forward. "Somewhere Far Beyond", beyond its speed-metal features, showed a formation capable of musically evolving towards a power metal with symphonic and progressive tendencies. And after a long wait, this hard work offer us "Imaginations From The Other Side", the 5th album of a band that nothing seems to stop. Because the result is brilliant: the group has grown up, lost a certain naivety, but has gained a strong personality and kept a great artistic value. In 49 minutes and 9 tracks, he presents a brilliant face in a record where nothing has been left to chance, each track presenting a meticulous work and a sequence that clearly suggests that we are following a medieval and fantastic story with a dark side put forward.
From the 7 minutes of the eponymous title, the journey begins: the sound is powerful and clear and highlights each musician. This piece fascinates by its majestic chorus, its chiselled choirs and its faster and more medieval passages. "I'm Alive" is a title of great beauty but very powerful, with Thomas Stauch's drums in particular, which do an impressive job of hammering. "The Script For My Requiem" is one of the great hits of the album, with epic and flamboyant choruses and a remarkable sense of melody.
With the trio "Mordred's Song", "Born In A Mourning Hall" and "Bright Eyes" the band then proves that they know how to compose engaging songs with a bewitching atmosphere with a power that is always there, even if the speed facet is put aside. The two guitarists compete in inventiveness on riffs and soli. Blind Guardian also offers a new acoustic and medieval ballad with "A Past And Future Secret", and the result is splendid and thrilling as Kürsch and his band show an impressive feeling. In this style, close to an Angelo Branduardi, they plunge us into an ancient story, magnified by a very beautiful guitar tune.
If we add a fascinating visual, perfectly designed with many details referring to heroic-fantasy mythology, we can easily understand that this is a classic of the band and melodic heavy-metal. By evolving his style, Blind Guardian gains a strong soul and propels himself to the top of the planet of the genre. However, we feel that the band is not yet expressing its full potential and that it is able to offer the ultimate album of the genre. In the meantime, we will enjoy this great record, both fascinating and intelligent and highly recommended to any fan of the genre. - Official website
