Shakra comes from Switzerland and has never won the full support of the Musicwaves reviewers, too repetitive, not original enough and, above all, too close to what his big brother, Gotthard, proposes. Second album since the departure of their emblematic vocalist, Mark Fox, "Powerplay" presents the same formation as on "Back On Track" with John Prakesh, the frontman from India, whose voice often reminded of these of the late Steve Lee.

The first two observations that can be made when listening to this production are that the musicians have muscled their music and that Prakesh moved away a little from the Steve Lee's style, except perhaps on the ballads. The compositions are once again melodious, we are still here in Melodic Hard rock territory but, the whole is more punchy.

Indeed, from the very first track, "Life Is Now", the tone is set and it only climbs in interest, especially with its thunderous successors that are "The Mask", "Higher", "Save You From Yourself", "Because Of You", and "Secret Hydeway", which splash you with their verve. Addictive chorus, powerful guitars, melodically strained soli, everything is there to make you shake your head.

Once again, Shakra doesn't revolutionize his hard rock but by muscling his creations he manages this time to stand out from his influences. It's already a big step forward.

OTHER REVIEWS
SAXON: Dogs Of War (1995)
MELODIC METAL - "Dogs Of War" is a great success, and revives Saxon's career which was slightly out of breath
CRADLE OF FILTH: Dusk... And Her Embrace (1996)
BLACK METAL - "Dusk And Her Embrace" is a great record from Cradle Of Filth, finely written and crafted, with deliciously disturbing gothic-romantic atmospheres.
