A three-year gap between two Saxon albums is rare enough to warrant mention. "Forever Free" gave such the impression of having been made in a hurry, with the sole aim of getting back out on tour, that it's hardly surprising that Biff and his band took their time polishing their new offering.

As soon as the eponymous track with its crushing riff opens hostilities, Saxon shows that it's not ready to soften his metal, and it's been a long time since we've heard it this Heavy. Although the mood lightens afterwards, the effectiveness remains the order of the day, with varied tempi and catchy choruses. The band's style remains recognizable but, without being particularly revolutionary, the quintet occasionally ventures into more surprising territory.

Of course, the unavoidable biker anthem is always present ('Burning Wheels'), and the more commercial, FM side still retains some space ('Hold On'), but Saxon tries out different styles, going Heavy on the verses and light on the chorus of 'Don't Worry', Hard Rock'n'roll on 'Big Twin Rolling (Coming Home)', integrating a North American Indian ambience into a heavy mid-tempo riff, melancholy and hypnotic on 'The Great White Buffalo', or flying off to the Far East on the atypical 'Walking Through Tokyo'. On the other hand, although more classic, 'Demolition Alley' demonstrates a simple but unstoppable effectiveness that deserves to be remembered.

Despite a slight dip at the end, and a production that would have benefited from more power, "Dogs Of War" is a great success, and revives Saxon's career which was slightly out of breath. The British once again demonstrate their energy and ability to evolve their music, raising hopes of a return to the forefront for this NWOBHM legend.

SHAKRA: Powerplay (2013)
MELODIC HARD ROCK - Once again, Shakra doesn't revolutionize his hard rock but by muscling his compositions he manages this time to stand out from his influences.
