Third album for Mr So & So, which is released this time by Dorian Music, Steve Rothery's label. After a stint with Cyclops that allowed them to work on their accessible progressive rock, the band took three years to polish the successor to "Compendium" and missed a golden opportunity since they toured as Marillion's opening act for two weeks in 1997, played in front of nearly 40,000 people but had nothing to sell, which was one of the reasons for their separation after the release of "The Overlap".

However, the progress made in three years is enormous. The production benefited from the passage at Dorian Music and the intervention of the engineers of Marillion. The bass has finally taken its place in the whole and is no longer mixed in front like before.

The leader/bassist has become more relaxed and his instrument is now used as a support without trying to be the attraction of the record. The compositions are once again rich in surprises, with many breaks ('Metaphor', 'Drowners'). Only the eponymous title, based on an initial mid tempo, and 'Coup De Grace', introduced by a beautiful piano solo and a moving vocal duet, are spared by this particularity and evolve constantly until producing powerful finales taking advantage of 6 strings soli and/or keyboards.

The voice, which was a point of improvement of Mr So & So, has evolved and is now much better, without being yet irreproachable. On the other hand, if Charlotte appears in the credits, she intervenes only very rarely and it's a pity because her voice is of any beauty.

Confirmation of the talent of Mr So & So, "The Overlap" presents a band always more mature and is presented as a right evolution between "Compendium" and its successor. eleven years later. The sound and the style of the English are from now on very personal making this album an ideal choice to discover the band.
