Timo's band is back with a new album under the divine sign of the fair wrath of gods : "Nemesis". It would be a short step to say that Stratovarius takes its revenge on its darker years with a new masterpiece. Anyway, the band has a new drummer, Rolf Pilve, and takes advantage of the freshness he brings to sign an opus that will mark his history.
Because this "Nemesis" seems to have been created to adapt to the skills and affinity of each musician. Each one of them has done his best to make this album sound as much like them as possible and to make it reflect the artistic renewal that the band has known for a few years. The recipe seems to be the right one because it works from the first listening with tracks like 'Abandon', 'Dragons' or 'Fantasy' whose complex melodies and catchy riffs will remind a bit the band's debut. The eponymous song displays revengeful choruses on a sustained rhythm and a sublime solo while the ballad - compulsory - 'If The Story Is Over', even if it remains restricted to a model of song overexploited by the Finnish (with the drums which join the group on the last refrains which are repeated on similar rhythms), it makes its effect as the melody and the song match to perfection.
Mathias' influence is noticeable, not only on the production of the album which he has entirely handled, but also in his original riffs and his few subtle and melodic shreds. Jens is not left aside with his keyboards whose sound is well highlighted on tracks like 'Out of the fog', 'Halcyon Days' in which he integrates electro elements for a futuristic atmosphere. Castles in the Air' is another good example of his performance where he delivers a superb solo and a bridge for 2 minutes of listening pleasure. As for Rolf, his playing, far from the style of his predecessor, seems to correspond in all points to the perfection expected by the band with notably fills carried out with great finesse. Of course, Stratovarius wouldn't be what it is without Timo's vocals, always as brilliant but this time a little less high pitched.
More aggressive than on "Elysium", such as "Stand My Grounds" and the epic "Out of the fog" with its verse riff and the choirs on the chorus, Stratovarius reaches here a new peak. The album enters the pantheon of the band's best albums alongside "Visions" and "Episode". No doubt this "Nemesis" will be unanimously acclaimed by the old demanding fans as well as the new ones.
