You might have guessed that Fear Factory and its members were fans of electronic music. Their first two albums proved it, and the "Fear Is The Mindkiller" EP made it obvious. In fact, the arrival of "Remanufacture" in 1997 was only half a surprise.
Although not the band's 3rd album, this remix of tracks from "Demanufacture" deserves special attention, as Fluber (ex Front Line Assembly) and the other DJs have done a tremendous job of transforming the perception of Fear Factory classics. "Remanufacture" acts as the soundtrack to a film in which machines have won their battle against humanity.
Although this new version is more electronic and techno, closer to Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers than Ministry, and thus abandons its original Thrash roots, the result is still quite interesting. Admittedly, the record is no longer as innovative as it was when it was first released, since in 16 years this kind of mix has largely become the norm, but put into context, it still represents an impressive piece of work.
In this respect, '21th Century Jesus', the rereading of 'Pisschrist' and 'Bound For Forgiveness' are fascinating and take us on a journey into a cold, dark universe. Fluber has taken these tracks and recreated them with a certain class. The album's big hits are presented in pure techno versions, sometimes close to hardcore techno and drum and bass, while retaining the original power. This regime suits 'Remanufacture', a new take on 'Demanufacture', 'Faithless', a reworking of 'Zero Signal', 'Machine Of Hate', which revisits the brilliant 'Self Bias Resistor', and 'T-1000', which effectively transfigures 'H-K'. The mix of guitars, keyboards and martial rhythms is a success, with a danceable, hypnotic edge typical of the genre.
Recommended for electro fans and Fear Factory fans alike, "Remanufacture" remains a curiosity in the band's discography. It shows just how open-minded these musicians are.
