Surfing on the wave of his good artistic form in solo and in a group (Chickenfoot), this is a Satch who had thrilled us with his Black Swans And Wormhole Wizards in 2010. The announcement of the release of his fifteenth album, Unstoppable Momentum, is therefore not surprising. Already present on Black Swans Mike Keneally is still master arranger and keyboardist of this new record but it is the rhythm section that creates surprise with the arrival of bassist Chris Chaney (Alanis Morissette and Jane's Addiction) and especially the brilliant Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Sting) on drums.
Unstoppable Momentum starts with a eponymous track full of melody and energy and already Vinnie's groove and finesse give another dimension to the classic rhythmic framework that structured the American's compositions. Colaiuta even offers us a drum solo, which for Satriani is a sign of enormous consideration. Mike Keneally's regenerating action, already evident in 2010, is completed by Colaiuta and Chaney who work wonders on the most atypical and progressive tracks.
Unstoppable Momentum is a mix of Satchian classicism and a lot of audacity of which Mike Keneally's fantasy is not totally foreign. There are classical tracks like "Can't Go Back", "A Door Into Summer" and "Shine On American Dreamer" for which Satriani relies on a simple structure and immediate melodies. The most interesting remains to come with the boogie incartades of the Siamese "Jumpin' In" and "Jumpin' Out", the jovial and perfectly arranged "Three Sheets To The Wind", the electro "The Weight Of The World" and its keyboard-guitar jousts or the dark "Lies & Truths" which sees all the musicians showing the extent of their talent.
Several observations emerge at the end of Unstoppable Momentum. Satch is less and less demonstrative (getting closer and closer to a Jeff Beck) and is able to put himself in danger in a good half of the album. The presence of Mike Keneally seems to accompany this grain of madness that we no longer expected from the Italian-American and the rookie Colaiuta is the best thing that has happened on the rhythm side since Manu Katché. If he continues to purify his playing and to deploy as much positive energy, the master is far from passing the torch to a new generation of musicians who can only be admiring in the face of such wisdom and maturity. - Official website
