The release of a Metallica album is an event that is shaking up the metal planet. The years - we'll forget a badly conceived 'Lulu' - don't change anything, Metallica is a musical monster beyond the simple sphere of heavy metal and every release is scrutinized. Even popular, the band has a pressure on his shoulders more than 8 years after a "Death Magnetic" that had divided the fans.
This delivery is declined on two discs with 12 tracks for 80 minutes. Forget about the bad sound of St Anger, this time the band regains an airy and well audible sound. Concerning the inspiration, Hetfield and Ulrich worked together to write all the tracks.
The first CD starts with the short and nervous 'Hardwired', what is probably the best idea of the band for a long time: Metallica is letting go, no longer trying to please everyone and enjoying themselves with a direct heavy thrash metal title. This first record contains more moments of bravery. 'Atlas, Rise' is remarkable with excellent Iron Maiden-like passages and a thrilling speed. 'Moth Into Flame' follows this thrash trend with an impressive rise in power with an excellent chorus. The rest of this first act is convincing, less straightforward with aspects that take us back to the era of "Load" for the heavy stoner side. So 'Now That We're Dead' and 'Dream No More' take the time to set the mood and see Hetfield vary the pleasures. Finally 'Halo On Fire' ends this record in beauty: calmer, this track alternates power and melody and becomes catchy. Metallica shows a seductive face almost not seen since the "Black Album".
Logically the second CD is in competition with its little brother. And given the level of the latter, the task promises to be tough. If It contains some good moments, it is unfortunately weight down by long tracks with stoner ambiences close to "Load" and "St Anger". Luckily the record is saved by much stronger titles. 'Manunkind' follows the stoner way but with more strength and a good entry riff, very Maiden-like, and is carried by a hetfield in a state of grace, especially on an excellent chorus. Finally the disc ends with a thrash missile, 'Spit Ouf The Bone', very direct with a very fast instrumental part. This track particularly fits in makes a great good and concludes the album as well as it started.
In spite of small flaws, Metallica succeeded in his bet with "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct": he erases the flaws of "Death Magnetic" and finds an unexpected dynamic worthy of his great era. Legends never die and Metallica proves it with class. Let's hope it won't take him another eight years to follow up on this opus. - Official website
