Although heavy metal with female vocals is no longer surprising, few bands manage to get away from it all, swallowed up by fierce competition. Thanks to the obvious charm of its singer coupled with a certain ability to propose the killing riff, Kobra And The Lotus is undeniably one of them. Accustomed to the North American waves and supported by the big machines that are Sony and then Universal Music, the Canadians have not escaped the status of a calibrated and soulless combo until now, despite the very good performance of its studio albums, including an unstoppable "High Priestness" (2014) and effective stage performances.
We were therefore waiting for the group to finally reach a form of maturity that it lacked, it is done. The fact that it is the first segment of a diptych immediately underlines the ambition of this fourth long-term effort, which is vividly confirmed by its irresistible content. "Gotham", the first single to be released from it, heralds the darker, even more formidable colour. Kobra Paige lays her vocal lines, alternately feline or carnivorous, next to which the pair of swordsmen composed of Jasio Kulakowski and Jack Dreyer weave a score filled with racy melodies. If the shadow of Within Temptation comes up at times, especially during an attractive "You Don't Know", Canadians free themselves from this influence by casting their compositions in a molten lead, which gives them a sharp power that is hammered by a bulldozer rhythm ('Specimen X', "Manifest Destiny"), without forgetting to make some neoclassical soli in the (good) Malmsteen tradition, as in the virtuoso instrumental "Check The Phyrg".
Combining the charm of a feminine melodic metal with a punchy heavy metal, Kobra And The Lotus shows in the most beautiful way with "Prevail I" that it is definitely not another band in the arena of the genre. We are now waiting for a follow-up that should confirm this maturity that has finally been achieved. - Official website
