After so many twists, others than Immortal would have definitively give up. The release of "All Shall Fall"' had seen Abbath and his companions make up for it but it did not last. The fiery singer eventually left the ship and embarked on a solo career with a solo album in 2016, taking with him what should have been the band's ninth album. The end of the story? Well no, because Demonaz and Horgh took the time to relaunch the machine with the help of Peter Tägtgren to offer us a "Northern Chaos Gods" which has the delicate mission to answer Abbath.

For this comeback, Demonaz took things in hand, recovering the microphone and especially his guitar that he had abandoned following a tendinitis 20 years ago. Tägtgren is on bass and the faithful Horgh behind the drums. The question comes from the band's capacity to exist without Abbath at the writing. But these doubts are quickly swept away, Demonaz plunged into the roots of the Immortal sound and left aside the heavy and catchy aspects brought since "At The Heart Of Winter". Thematically, we are in the classic with names evocative of a very well-known but always fascinating universe.

The result is a cold, epic and gripping record in which the strength of Norwegian black metal blows with a spirit that goes straight back to "Battles In The North", reminding the soul of Bathory. As for the black metal breath, just listen to the first two tracks of the album, 'Nothern Chaos Gods' and 'Into Battle Ride', two bitter and violent punches. Immortal goes back to its roots and regains a delectable pure and hard violence. On vocals, Demonaz is perfect, howling with conviction.

Behind this thunderous beginning, the listener navigates in a very captivating world. 'Gates To Blashyrh', 'Where Mountains Rise' and 'Mighty Ravendark' form a fearsome trio with a straight warrior spirit from the north and a thrilling melodic and epic force. Over more than 9 minutes, 'Mighty Ravendark' is even a climax, the perfect synthesis of what Immortal is all about. Beside, we can mention the short and intense 'Black Of Worlds' or 'Grim And Dark' carried by a huge riff and a formidable fire power thanks to a Horgh that hit his drums like a damned man.

To speak about miracle is not exaggerated to evoke this incredible album that Immortal proposes to us. "Northern Chaos Gods" is the return that we thought impossible. Demonaz and his mates give us a lesson of Black Metal and remind us who the bosses are.
