After the release of "Kingslayer", it made sense to think that Almanac had become a real band. The following adventures weakened the idea, three members having left its ranks, including its two singers, Andy B. Franck and David Readman. There remains a hard core around Victor Smolski with singer Jeannette Marchewka and bassist Tim Rashid. For "Rush Of Death", Patrick Suhl was recruited with two guests, Franck Beck and Marcel Junker. With a cover far from his predecessors, the record features car racing, a theme which is not surprising if one knows Smolski's passion for racing.
Conceived as a concept featuring the track's gladiators, the record is in line with Smolski's work. We find the epic and technical heavy that made his fame with some great moments of bravery on the guitar and a discreet but present symphonic side. Presented as a sequel to the wise Lingua Mortis on Rage's "Speak Of The Dead", 'Rush Of Death' is a good first moment. Epic and melodic, it allows the singers to shine in perfect harmony, showing a virtuoso but not pompous side that delights the ears with remarkable symphonic arrangements.
The symbiosis of voices allows 'Solied Existence', 'Satisfied', 'Can't Hold Me Back' and 'Like A Machine' to delight the listener. The result is a brilliant combination of good refrains, perfect backing vocals and a beautiful alternation of tones, reminiscent of Savatage's work. Beside Smolski does an excellent job. He shines on each solo with a darker side put forward and calm and melancholic passages that bring a nice extra touch of soul. 'Bought And Sold' and 'Blink Of A Eye' are much more generic with an unconvincing vocal part and a lack of musical originality.
These little flaws don't spoil the good impression left by the record. With 'Rush Of Death', Almanac achieves a nice musical and vocal tour de force. Victor Smolski confirms his virtuosity but once again the record will delight the listener thanks to the vocals and their beautiful diversity. - Official website
